Washington announced on Thursday that it will provide Ukraine with a new military assistance package valued at $600 million. This aid primarily consists of demining equipment and various types of ammunition.
This announcement comes a day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealed a separate $1 billion assistance package for Kyiv. The Pentagon, in its statement on Thursday, confirmed its commitment to grant $600 million in military aid to the Ukrainian armed forces.
This assistance aims to address “Ukraine’s battlefield requirements” and further showcases the “unwavering support” from the United States. However, this new aid won’t be immediately available on the ground. It falls under the umbrella of the US Security Assistance Program for Ukraine, whereby Washington provides equipment to the country through its defense industry or its partners, rather than directly drawing from its stockpiles.
In addition to the aforementioned aid, Blinken’s announcement on Wednesday included provisions to supply Ukraine with 120mm caliber ammunition containing depleted uranium for the American-made Abrams tanks, which Washington has promised to deliver to Kyiv.
It’s worth noting that the US leads an international coalition to support Ukraine and has committed to providing over $43 billion in military assistance to Kyiv since the onset of the conflict in February 2022.
