US President Joe Biden has expressed concern that the ongoing war in Gaza could inadvertently fulfill the objectives of Hamas.
This statement comes as his administration actively mediates to achieve a more extended ceasefire in the conflict that has been raging since October 7th, despite a recent short-lived truce in the region.
Biden stated that the continuation of the war in Gaza is precisely what Hamas wants, preventing Palestinians and Israelis from coexisting peacefully. In a tweet on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he said, ” Hamas unleashed a terrorist attack because they fear nothing more than Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in peace.”
“To continue down the path of terror, violence, killing, and war is to give Hamas what they seek,” he added.
Earlier, the White House indicated that Washington is working on the possibility of extending the current truce.
This recent statement sheds light on a shift in the US stance, which has staunchly supported Israel since last month, rejecting a permanent ceasefire in the besieged Palestinian territory, fearing it might give Hamas a chance to regroup.
CIA Director William Burns, who is exerting significant efforts to extend the truce and exchange more prisoners held by Hamas in Gaza, arrived in Doha yesterday.
He met with the Israeli intelligence chief and Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation reported that “the Israeli delegation, led by the head of Mossad, proposed a long-term ceasefire during talks in Doha with the heads of intelligence services from the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, but under specific conditions.”
This development in U.S. policy highlights the complexity of the situation in Gaza and the challenges of achieving a sustainable peace in the region.
Biden’s comments reflect a nuanced approach, recognizing the strategic implications of the ongoing conflict and the necessity of a balanced resolution.
