Samuel Werberg, the regional spokesperson for the US State Department, stated on Tuesday that Hamas will have no role in the future of Gaza. In an exclusive interview with Sky News Arabia, Werberg emphasized that the US aims to end the conflict in Gaza as swiftly as possible.
He highlighted that the US has presented a new proposal to bridge gaps in ongoing negotiations, working alongside Egypt and Qatar to achieve a resolution. The proposal focuses on implementing details previously agreed upon between the Israeli government and Hamas.
Werberg also noted that while Egypt is not a party to the conflict, it plays a crucial role as a mediator and has legitimate concerns about its security, which the US acknowledges.
Regarding Gaza’s future, Werberg reiterated that Hamas will not have any role, and it will be up to the Palestinian people to choose their representatives in any future government. He added that the US believes the Palestinian people deserve a state with a government capable of providing essential services and enforcing laws, a role that the Palestinian Authority can fulfill post-war.
