A joint ministerial statement released after a meeting between foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and the United States emphasized the pursuit of a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

The GCC Secretariat, through its official website, reported that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed, during his meeting with the foreign ministers of GCC member countries and the GCC Secretary-General, Jasim Al-Budaiwi, in New York on Tuesday, the commitment to a Syrian settlement that preserves Syria’s sovereignty and unity.

The ministers expressed their appreciation for Arab efforts to gradually resolve the Syrian crisis, aligning with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254. This alignment was determined during the Ministerial Contact Group for Syria meeting in Amman on May 1, 2023, and reconfirmed on August 15, 2023, in Cairo.

The Syrian crisis has been a longstanding issue characterized by a complex web of political, humanitarian, and regional dimensions. It began in 2011 with pro-democracy protests and has since evolved into a multifaceted conflict involving various domestic and international actors.

United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254, mentioned in the statement, outlines the framework for a political transition in Syria. It calls for a ceasefire, the formation of a transitional government, and the drafting of a new constitution, among other measures, with the ultimate goal of ending the conflict and establishing a peaceful, democratic Syria.

The involvement of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the United States in seeking a political solution highlights the international community’s ongoing efforts to address the Syrian crisis diplomatically. The emphasis on Syria’s sovereignty and unity reflects the shared commitment to finding a resolution that respects the rights and aspirations of the Syrian people.

This joint statement reinforces the importance of diplomatic initiatives and international cooperation in seeking an end to the Syrian conflict, underscoring the significance of political dialogue in resolving one of the most challenging crises in the Middle East.
