In a stern response to the resumption of hostilities in Gaza, the United Nations children’s agency, UNICEF, has denounced the recommencing of violence, emphasizing the severe threat it poses to the region’s children.

Addressing the media in Geneva via video link from the besieged Palestinian enclave, UNICEF spokesman James Elder expressed deep concern about the precarious humanitarian situation in Gaza. He stressed that sustained peace and significant emergency aid are imperative to avert a catastrophic outcome for the children of Gaza.

Elder highlighted the dire conditions affecting health, nutrition, water, and sanitation in the area, warning that the situation could lead to a disaster of unprecedented magnitude for the children. He asserted that inaction amounts to an endorsement of the killing of children, characterizing it as reckless to believe that further attacks on Gaza would result in anything other than carnage.

Expressing his dismay at the indifference towards the tragic deaths of children, Elder remarked, “To accept the sacrifice of the children in Gaza is humanity giving up. This is our last chance before we delve into yet again explaining why another entirely avoidable tragedy was not stopped.”

Providing a firsthand account of the impact of the renewed hostilities, Elder revealed that he visited children at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. He recounted how, during the truce, glimpses of childhood gradually returned to traumatized and wounded children. However, with the resumption of explosions, he observed an immediate reversal, as fear took hold and childhood once again retreated.

The UNICEF spokesman concluded by emphasizing the urgency of addressing the crisis and preventing further harm to the children of Gaza, urging the international community to take decisive action to ensure the safety and well-being of the region’s youngest inhabitants.
