US Carries out 2 Strikes in Syria
The U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin left open the possibility of more strikes against Iran-linked groups in Iraq and Syria, in response to attacks on American forces. This statement came hours after two U.S. air strikes in Syria were carried out.
During a press conference in Seoul, Austin stated, “These attacks must stop, and if they don’t, we will not hesitate to do what’s necessary, again, to protect our forces.” He confirmed that the U.S. strikes in eastern Syria aimed to weaken the groups responsible for assaults on American troops. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that eight Iran-aligned fighters were killed in the U.S. strikes in eastern Syria, following Washington’s announcement of Sunday’s raids as a retaliation against attacks on U.S. forces.
The Observatory detailed, “The military death toll from the U.S. air strikes on Deir ez-Zor in the past few hours is eight, including at least one Syrian national, as well as Iraqis.” The late Sunday raids targeted the areas of Mayadin and Bukamal in the Deir ez-Zor province of eastern Syria.
On Monday, the so-called “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” declared it targeted a U.S. army base in Syria with a drone. The Iran-affiliated group claimed it directly hit the “American occupation base in the Green Village deep in Syrian territory” with a drone.
The “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” continues to target American bases in both Iraq and Syria almost daily, as well as launching strikes into Eilat, Israel. The group has carried out over 52 operations since the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas in October 2023.
