US President Joe Biden has called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to minimise civilian casualties during military operations in Lebanon, especially in Beirut’s densely populated areas, while expressing support for Israel’s efforts to combat Hezbollah.
In a call with Netanyahu, Biden affirmed Israel’s right to defend itself against the militant group, which has launched thousands of rockets into Israel over the past year, but emphasised the importance of reducing harm to civilians, particularly in highly populated areas like Beirut.
The discussion also included the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with Biden stressing the need to restore access to the northern regions and to reopen humanitarian corridors, including one from Jordan. The leaders addressed the urgency of diplomatic efforts to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas.
The call took place amid rising tensions between Israel, Iran, and Hezbollah in Lebanon, following a missile attack by Iran last week in response to Israeli military escalation. With Netanyahu vowing that Iran would face consequences and Tehran threatening extensive retaliation, fears of a broader regional war are growing.
