The US administration has reiterated its commitment to supporting the Sudanese people in their pursuit of democracy and civil governance, amid ongoing conflicts that challenge these goals.
This pledge was emphasized by the US Special Envoy to Sudan, Tom Brellio, particularly during remarks made on the occasion of the “International Day of Democracy.”
On his X platform page, Brellio expressed the U.S.’s steadfast support for the Sudanese people’s unwavering demand for a fully democratic governance led by civilians.
He celebrated the Sudanese revolution against the Islamist regime led by former President Omar al-Bashir, stating, “We honor the Sudanese people who inspired the world with their uprising to reject the oppressive regime and refuse control over their future.”
Brellio condemned those perpetuating the conflict, calling their actions an “insult to the Sudanese dream and a disregard for the Sudanese’s courage and their peaceful stance,” which notably led to the overthrow of the oppressive regime through a popular uprising on April 11, 2019.
While Brellio did not explicitly name the parties he vowed to stand against—those advocating for the continuation of war and conflict—his past statements have clearly identified them as supporters of the former regime, members of the “National Congress” party, and Islamists.
In related developments, platforms affiliated with the “Rapid Support Forces” have circulated video clips claiming their forces in the Sennar city area repelled an attack by the Sudanese army near the Mayerno region, inflicting severe losses in personnel and equipment. The army or its supporters have not commented on these claims.
Furthermore, several platforms connected to the “Rapid Support Forces” and the “Baraa bin Malik Brigade” reported the death of a prominent brigade leader, artillery commander in Sennar, Mohamed Badawi Bashir.
