According to Romania’s “Agerpres” agency, sources within the Ministry of Defense have confirmed that Romania will acquire American Abrams tanks by 2026.
The sources indicated that the Ministry of Defense will collaborate with specialized industrial sectors to ensure comprehensive logistic support for the tank supply.
Last November, the US administration notified Congress of a deal to sell 54 Abrams M1A2 tanks, along with associated equipment, valued at around $1.07 billion.
With Congress’s approval of the deal, it is expected that a contract will be signed between the US and Romanian governments.
Romanian media reports suggest that the conflict in Ukraine has extended the timeline for arms deals, meaning Romania will not receive the tanks until 2026.
Washington has promised to provide Kyiv with 31 older versions of the Abrams tank, and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed in late September that some had arrived.
The State Department approved the possible sale to Romania, and the DSCA on Thursday provided the required notification to Congress, which still needs to sign off on the transaction.
