US Airstrikes Target Iranian Militias in Syria

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Saturday that around 20 members of Iranian-backed militias were killed or injured in American airstrikes near the Syrian-Iraqi border.

According to the Observatory, “approximately 20 members of the Iranian militias were killed or wounded as a preliminary count, in 9 American airstrikes.”

The U.S. strikes reportedly targeted military headquarters and an arms shipment in and around the city of Al-Bukamal, close to the Syrian-Iraqi border.

On the preceding Wednesday, loud explosions were heard, resulting from an unidentified drone targeting a site near the Marmar oil well in the desert of Al-Bukamal, in eastern Deir Ezzor’s countryside.

The Observatory noted that the targeted site housed a camp for militias loyal to Iran, which contained several heavy vehicles used for tunnel digging.

Earlier, the Israeli Air Force launched a strike resulting in the tragic death of at least eleven high-ranking officers from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a prominent branch of the Iranian Armed Forces.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, according to sources cited by Al Arabiya television.

The Iranian officers were reportedly at Damascus International Airport, welcoming a distinguished delegation when the attack took place.

Nur Rashid, the commander of the IRGC in eastern Syria, sustained injuries during the assault. The Israeli strike occurred on Thursday at 11:05 p.m. local time, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the Syrian Armed Forces.

Despite effective air defenses intercepting most of the missiles, the targeted location was identified as Damascus International Airport, which had recently resumed operations.
