Last night, Juliette Touma, Director of Communications for UNRWA, announced that all donor countries, except for the United States and the United Kingdom, have resumed funding for the agency.
Touma, speaking via video from Amman during the UN’s daily press briefing, warned of the financial challenges facing UNRWA, which provides human development services to Palestinian refugees across the region, including over 500,000 children in its schools.
She noted that it is difficult to predict the future operations of the agency beyond June.
Regarding the situation in Rafah, Touma stated that the international organization “Medical Aid for Palestinians” reported that at least 200 people were martyred in the Israeli airstrike that hit refugee tents in Rafah on Sunday. She added that the consequences of the attack are enormous, heightening the fear of death.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres yesterday called on Israel to comply with the International Court of Justice’s order concerning Rafah, which mandates an immediate halt to military operations, the opening of crossings, and the improvement of humanitarian aid flow to Gaza without delay.
