The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Commander, Major General Stefano Del Col, has voiced deep concern about the situation in southern Lebanon and the possibility of broader and more intense hostile activities.

This statement follows meetings held in Beirut with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, and the caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, just ahead of the United Nations Security Council consultations on Resolution 1701, scheduled for November 22.

Major General Del Col emphasized that UNIFIL’s top priorities at this moment are preventing escalation, protecting civilian lives, and ensuring the safety and security of peacekeepers who strive to achieve these goals.

He noted that Resolution 1701 faces challenges at present but emphasized that its principles concerning security, stability, and achieving a long-term solution remain valid.

Major General Del Col underscored the crucial importance of UNIFIL’s neutral role in conveying critical messages to reduce tensions and prevent dangerous misunderstandings, with the aim of avoiding any unjustified escalation.

He expressed gratitude to President Berri and Prime Minister Mikati for their efforts in restoring stability during these critical days, including through diplomatic channels. He also acknowledged the trust they have placed in UNIFIL’s liaison mechanisms to avoid further escalation.

In light of the evolving situation in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL remains committed to its mission of ensuring peace and security in the region while working to de-escalate tensions and support the pursuit of a long-term resolution.
