The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has expressed deep concern over a “rapid and alarming increase” in acts of violence along the Lebanon-Israel border in recent days, calling for an immediate ceasefire.
UNIFIL, in a statement released via its platform, noted that this marks the first time a Lebanese Army soldier has been killed during this “critical” period, emphasizing that the Lebanese Army has refrained from engaging in conflict with Israel.
The statement said that UNIFIL continues to urge those involved in the exchanges of fire along the Blue Line to halt the cycle of violence, which could have dire consequences for people on both sides of the Blue Line.
The Blue Line serves as the demarcation line between Lebanon and Israel, established by the United Nations in 2000.
It is monitored by UNIFIL to help maintain stability in the region.
Tensions have been escalating in the border area, with both sides exchanging fire in recent days.
UNIFIL’s call for a ceasefire aims to prevent further escalation and protect the lives of civilians in the region.
