The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, Volker Turk, expressed hope for a ceasefire in Sudan, emphasizing the importance of securing humanitarian aid access and ensuring the safety of aid workers to allow them to carry out their duties.

This was stated during Turk’s meeting with Mawlana Al-Fateh Mohammed Issa Tayfour, Sudan’s Attorney General and Chairman of the National Committee for Investigating Crimes and Violations of National and International Humanitarian Law. The meeting was reported by the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA) on Thursday.

Volker Turk also stressed the need for accountability for violations, highlighting the importance of preventing impunity and enforcing principles of justice and transitional justice in the country. He reaffirmed his readiness to provide the necessary assistance in this regard.

For his part, Tayfour provided an overview of the investigations carried out by the Sudanese National Committee. He emphasized that the committee is an independent body comprising legal experts from various ministries and institutions, tasked with investigating crimes and violations of national and international humanitarian law, particularly those covered under Chapter 18 of the Sudanese Criminal Code, such as war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
