United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire between the warring parties in Sudan on Saturday, as the UN Security Council voted to terminate the United Nations political mission in Sudan.
A spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General stated that the organization would continue to carry out its core functions in Sudan despite the Security Council’s decision to end its mission there.
The United Nations Security Council had voted to terminate the mandate of the United Nations political mission in Sudan at the request of the acting Sudanese Foreign Minister last month, describing the mission’s performance as disappointing.
The spokesperson for Guterres emphasized that the UN team in Sudan would continue its work to accomplish its core tasks.
In a statement, it was mentioned that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is deeply concerned about the escalation in Sudan and its “devastating” impact on civilians.
He will continue to engage with the parties involved in the Sudan crisis.
The statement also noted that the Secretary-General’s Special Representative to Sudan would support ongoing peace efforts in coordination with the African Union and IGAD.
The civil war in Sudan has resulted in more than 10,000 deaths since April, according to a cautious estimate by the Akhbar Organization.
The UN reports that 6 million people have been displaced from their homes, and the war has caused extensive damage to infrastructure.
