The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon, Imran Riza, announced a 24-million-US dollar emergency aid package on Friday to support Lebanon’s most vulnerable populations amid ongoing crises, including the Hezbollah-Israel conflict.
Lebanon is currently facing multiple challenges that have strained its capacity to respond effectively. “Despite our efforts, only 25 percent of our annual appeal has been funded,” Riza said, calling for more international support.
According to a UN Information Center statement, $10 million of the aid will go towards conflict-affected groups in southern Lebanon, $13 million to vulnerable communities across the country, and $1 million to help local NGOs improve their response capabilities.
Riza emphasized that while over 200,000 people have been assisted through the Lebanon Humanitarian Fund (LHF), more funding is essential to address immediate needs and strengthen preparedness for future crises.
In November 2023, the LHF allocated $4.1 million to support displaced individuals and response efforts in southern Lebanon. In February 2024, the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund contributed an additional $9 million to address urgent needs, particularly in the south.
