A United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) officer sustained injuries following the impact of two Israeli shells at a UN base near the Al-Abbad location in Southern Lebanon.
According to the National Media Agency, the injured officer, a captain from Nepal, suffered moderate injuries to his abdomen and arm when the shells hit the UNIFIL base in the town of Hula on Saturday.
UNIFIL released a statement on Saturday revealing that an unidentified shell had landed at its headquarters in Naqoura, South Lebanon but did not explode, causing damage to the facility. Thankfully, there were no casualties reported, and the force is currently investigating the “source of the attack.”
In its statement, UNIFIL called on all parties to cease fire immediately, highlighting that such acts could constitute violations of international law. The peacekeeping force affirmed its ongoing presence and active engagement with all parties to de-escalate tensions and prevent any severe misunderstandings.
On the same day, the Israeli military announced that it had intercepted a rocket fired from Southern Lebanon towards one of its aircraft. In response, the Israeli forces retaliated against the source of the rocket fire, although further details were not disclosed.
Tensions have been escalating, particularly in light of the recent confrontations between the Palestinian movement Hamas and the Israeli forces since the launch of “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood” by Hamas in the early hours of October 7.
The operation involved firing thousands of rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel, as well as infiltrations by its fighters into adjacent Israeli settlements, resulting in numerous casualties among Israeli soldiers and civilians.
In response, Israel initiated “Operation Iron Swords,” vowing to make Hamas pay a heavy price for its attack. On October 8, Israel formally declared war on the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, the tension along the Israeli-Lebanese border has heightened, with intermittent artillery exchanges between the Israeli military and the Lebanese Hezbollah, raising concerns in Israel about potential infiltrations from the Lebanese border into Israeli territory.
With the ongoing conflict and increasing hostilities in the region, the situation remains tense, and the international community is closely monitoring developments.
