Hanan Hamdan, head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Egypt, emphasised that a joint program launched by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the European Union and various UN agencies, aims to strengthen the protection and resilience of refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants in Egypt.
In an interview with “Nile News,” Hamdan stated that the program highlights the urgent need for international support for Egyptian institutions, particularly in education and healthcare, to handle the growing number of refugees and asylum seekers. The initiative also seeks to attract additional donations to help Egyptian institutions protect and care for refugees.
Hamdan noted that Egypt has already received over one million refugees from Sudan, with the UNHCR registering 800,000 refugees from various nationalities, the majority of whom are Sudanese. Egypt is actively working to provide healthcare and education for the most vulnerable groups through continuous cooperation with the UNHCR.
Official statistics indicate that Egypt has taken in 1.2 million individuals from Sudan. The joint program aims to address these pressing needs and coordinate efforts to support Egypt’s refugee protection initiatives. The UNHCR is also seeking additional donors and exploring collaboration opportunities with the European Union to meet the critical needs in healthcare, education, and other sectors.
