United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres hopes that the Security Council will vote in favor of keeping a key border crossing between Turkey and northwestern Syria open for one year, according to a UN official.
Media reports state that the UN official said, ” Guterres hopes that the Security Council will vote later this month to keep a key border crossing between Turkey and opposition-held northwestern Syria open for one year instead of the current six months to ensure the delivery of essential aid.”
The Security Council is expected to vote on the resolution in the coming days, as the current six-month period expires on July 10. Russia has frequently used its veto power to prevent the entry of cross-border aid and instead relies on aid delivered from within Syria through contact lines with the Syrian government.
