The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, confirmed that 100,000 people have fled from Lebanon to Syria to escape ongoing Israeli airstrikes on Lebanese territory.
Grandi shared this information via a post on the social media platform “X” (formerly Twitter), stating that the number of people crossing into Syria due to the Israeli attacks had reached 100,000 and continues to rise.
He also mentioned that UNHCR is present at four border crossings alongside Lebanese authorities to monitor the number of displaced individuals and assess their needs.
Early Tuesday, the Israeli military declared the commencement of a ground operation in southern Lebanon.
According to an Israeli military statement, the operation involves “limited and targeted raids on Hezbollah targets along the southern border area.”
The statement further elaborated that the targeted locations are in villages near the border, posing a direct threat to the population centers in northern Israel.
It continued, “The air force and artillery are supporting ground troops with precise strikes on military targets in the area.”
The military emphasized that Operation Northern Arrows will continue based on situational assessments, in parallel with ongoing engagements in Gaza and other fronts.
It was noted that these operations were approved and carried out following decisions by the political leadership.
The announcement follows reports by the Lebanese News Agency of Israeli aircraft activity over Beirut and its southern suburbs.
