Ukraine’s top military official reported on Sunday that the situation in the Kharkiv region remains challenging as Ukrainian forces engage in intense defensive battles.
Russia initiated a new offensive from its territory into northern Ukraine on Friday, potentially signaling the opening of a new front in the ongoing 27-month conflict. Despite Moscow’s claim of capturing five villages, Kyiv maintains that its forces are effectively repelling these attacks and are actively contesting the control of these areas.
According to military chief Syrskyi, via a post on Telegram, Ukrainian Defense Forces have successfully halted Russian attempts to breach their defenses. “The situation is tough, but our forces are fully committed to maintaining our defensive lines and inflicting losses on the enemy,” he stated.
Currently, Ukraine is on the defensive, facing a Russian force with a substantial advantage in manpower and munitions. Delays in U.S. aid, attributed to slow Congressional approval, have purportedly impacted Ukraine’s military effectiveness on the ground. With the recent approval of substantial aid, Ukraine anticipates a swift arrival of support to bolster its defense capabilities.
Military spokesperson Nazar Voloshyn, speaking on Ukrainian television, highlighted that Russian military efforts are concentrated on expanding the battlefront, specifically targeting the towns of Vovchansk and Lyptsi. Notably, Lyptsi is approximately 20 kilometers from Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, which had previously seen Russian forces pushed back to the border in 2022.
Voloshyn also addressed the public, urging calm and awareness of Russia’s concurrent information campaign designed to cause panic. He reassured that the Ukrainian defense forces are maintaining their positions and the situation is under control.
