Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy engaged in an unexpected meeting at Shannon Airport with Sudanese army general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. The discussions centered on security challenges arising from Russia’s invasion, with Zelenskyy expressing their mutual intent to “intensify” collaboration between Ukraine and African nations.
In a social media post, Zelenskyy conveyed his appreciation for Sudan’s unwavering support, highlighting their commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He elaborated on the topics covered during the meeting, emphasizing the security concerns related to the activities of illegal armed groups funded by Russia. Additionally, Zelenskyy extended an invitation to Sudan to support the “Grain From Ukraine” initiative and participate in this year’s summit, while exploring avenues for enhanced cooperation between Ukraine and African countries.
Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, as the head of Sudan’s army following a coup in 2021, holds a significant position in Sudan’s leadership. Notably, he expressed openness to peace negotiations with Sudan’s rebel forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. Dagalo’s group, the Rapid Support Forces, has received support from the Russian mercenary group Wagner. The protracted civil conflict in Sudan has resulted in significant human suffering, with the United Nations estimating over 5,000 casualties and five million people displaced since its onset.
