British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated on Monday that he believes a two-state solution is the only way to bring about a new future in the Israeli-Palestinian region.
Speaking at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet while discussing UK foreign policy, Sunak emphasized that the past should not hinder the future.
He noted that the recent attack by Hamas on Israel was motivated not only by hatred but also by fear that a changing Middle East, with Israel normalizing relations with its neighbors, would offer hope for a more secure and prosperous future.
The Prime Minister reiterated that Israel has the right to defend itself against terrorism, ensure its security, and bring hostages home.
However, he also stressed that Israel must act within international law, protect innocent civilians (including those in hospitals), address extremist violence in the West Bank, and allow more aid into Gaza.
The British Prime Minister highlighted conversations with Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, who described the suffering of the Palestinian people.
Sunak emphasized the UK’s commitment to doubling aid to Gaza, pressing for humanitarian access, and using bases in Cyprus as a staging post for aid deliveries.
Sunak also called for the creation of a new political horizon for peace and unity around the two-state solution, which he believes is the answer to acknowledge the history and hurt of both peoples and pave the way for a new future.
He pledged to redouble efforts in support of this solution and to provide practical and enduring support to bolster the Palestinian Authority, aiming to combat the influence of Hamas and work towards genuine peace in the region.
