In a significant meeting held on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Somali National Army, Commander Brigadier General Ibrahim Sheikh Mohyuddin met with British Ambassador Mike Nithavrianakis.
The discussion centered on enhancing British support for the Somali military, including plans to build, train, and rehabilitate army forces and bases.
Brigadier General Mohyuddin expressed his gratitude to the British government for its efforts in training and qualifying the Somali army.
On his part, Ambassador Nithavrianakis pledged continued British military support for Somalia, as reported by the Somali News Agency (SONA).
This meeting coincides with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud’s official visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt.
Invited by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, President Mahmoud’s visit aims to strengthen historical relations and defense and security cooperation between Somalia and Egypt, amidst shared interests and regional situations.
The visit highlights President Mahmoud’s commitment to enhancing Somali-Egyptian relations, including signing a military cooperation agreement to boost security and defense collaboration between the two nations against terrorism threats.
In July, the Turkish Parliament approved a presidential memorandum to deploy military forces to Somalia, including its territorial waters, for two years.
This deployment is part of a defense cooperation agreement aimed at supporting security and counter-terrorism efforts in the African nation.
The presidential memorandum, submitted to Parliament last week and approved late Friday, states that Turkish military training, assistance, and advisory activities continue to ensure security and stability in Somalia under bilateral agreements.
These agreements involve restructuring Somalia’s defense and security forces to enhance their capabilities against terrorism, piracy, smuggling, and other threats.
