In a significant development, the Russian Ministry of Defense has declared the successful exchange of 100 Russian soldiers who were held in captivity in Ukraine. The exchange, facilitated through mediation by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), took place on February 8, 2024.

In an official statement, the ministry highlighted the negotiation process that led to the safe return of the Russian soldiers, emphasizing that they were in mortal danger while in captivity within the territory controlled by the Kiev regime. As part of the exchange, an equivalent number of prisoners of war were sent to Kiev from the Russian side.

The released Russian soldiers will be transported to Moscow, where they will receive medical treatment in institutions affiliated with the Ministry of Defense. The statement assured that all necessary medical and psychological assistance will be provided to the returning fighters.

Acknowledging the pivotal role played by the UAE in the successful mediation, the Russian Ministry of Defense expressed gratitude for their assistance in securing the release of the Russian soldiers.

This recent exchange follows a previous one on January 31, where the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the recovery of 195 Russian soldiers in a similar prisoner exchange with Ukraine. The ongoing diplomatic efforts and exchanges aim to address the humanitarian aspect of the conflict and potentially contribute to de-escalation in the region.
