President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey declared on Wednesday his commitment to escalating strikes against Kurdish fighters in Syria and Iraq. Turkey has been conducting airstrikes in northeast Syria, targeting both civilian and military sites, infrastructure, and causing casualties, as reported by Kurdish authorities.
Erdogan, in his statement, pledged to intensify air operations against fighters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an organization designated as a terrorist group by Turkey and its Western allies. He emphasized the determination to demonstrate the ability to destroy the PKK anywhere and at any moment.
The recent wave of Turkish airstrikes began following an attack in Ankara earlier in the month that resulted in injuries to two security personnel. The PKK claimed responsibility for the attack, marking the first bombing in the Turkish capital since 2016.
Ankara has stated that the renewed air strikes are in retaliation for the Ankara attack, portraying it as a response to the PKK’s actions. The situation raises concerns about the escalation of hostilities in the region and the potential impact on civilian populations and infrastructure.
