Turkey’s Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, announced yesterday the arrest of 88 individuals suspected of being affiliated with the terrorist organization ISIS. Yerlikaya explained that the arrests were part of a coordinated operation between the intelligence and anti-terrorism departments of the General Directorate of Security. “The apprehension of the 88 suspects took place over five days of ongoing operations against ISIS in 23 provinces,” stated the Turkish Minister. Turkish security forces have been conducting raids to track down ISIS members in response to attacks for which the organization has claimed responsibility in Turkey over the past years.
Turkey has been actively conducting operations against ISIS, resulting in numerous arrests across the country. Recently, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that security forces detained 99 suspected members of ISIS in a nationwide operation, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism within the nation’s borders. These operations were widespread, involving major cities like Ankara and Izmir, reflecting the extensive reach of the crackdown.
The arrests are part of Turkey’s broader strategy to prevent ISIS from regaining a foothold in the region. This proactive approach follows several incidents attributed to ISIS, including a deadly attack on a church in Istanbul, underscoring the persistent threat posed by the group despite its territorial losses in Iraq and Syria.
