Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will visit Tunisia for a two-day working visit on December 20 and 21, 2023, at the invitation of his Tunisian counterpart, Nabil Ammar.
The Tunisian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the visit is part of efforts to intensify political consultations, explore ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in all areas, and develop trade exchanges between the two countries.
The statement added that the talks will also provide an opportunity to deepen consultations on current regional and international issues, including the serious situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The two sides will also discuss the possibility of calling for intensified international efforts to reach a permanent ceasefire and deliver urgent humanitarian assistance to civilians.
Relations between the two countries are characterized by their long history and have been strengthened through the establishment of a political consultation mechanism, the exchange of ministerial and parliamentary visits, and the diversification of cooperation areas such as trade, tourism, culture, sports, and transportation.
Tunisia is seeking to attract Russian tourists as part of its efforts to diversify its tourism markets. According to official statistics, the number of Russian visitors to Tunisia reached 21,506 by October 2023.
Russia hosts about 2,000 Tunisian students, and has allocated 60 university scholarships for Tunisian students in the 2024-2025 academic year.
The two countries also aim to elevate the level of bilateral cooperation and activate it in the areas of agriculture, education, transportation, media, and decentralization through the conclusion of twin cities agreements between a number of Tunisian and Russian cities, as well as exploring new opportunities for investment, equitable partnership, and mutual benefit that are offered by the promising potential of the two countries.
