Tunisia has called on the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to provide support to the Tunisian Red Crescent in its efforts toward irregular migrants.
According to a statement from the Tunisian Interior Ministry, this call was made during a meeting between Interior Minister Kamel El Fakhri and the Head of the UNHCR, Monica Noro, on Friday.
During the meeting, the Tunisian Minister affirmed that “Tunisia has a tradition of addressing humanitarian situations that require care and attention, especially the efforts of Tunisian security forces in rescue and relief operations and the humane treatment of irregular migrants.”
El Fakhri praised “the fieldwork conducted by the Tunisian Red Crescent toward migrants.”
He also highlighted Tunisia’s commitment to continue implementing national legislation within the framework of full respect for human rights principles and international conventions.
Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of consulting with the Tunisian state before taking any position, considering Tunisia a full member of the UN organization.
Tunisia and Libya announced an agreement last Thursday to host migrants coming from sub-Saharan African countries and stranded at the border between the two countries for about a month.
It’s worth mentioning that Tawfiq Al-Shakri, the spokesperson for the Libyan Red Crescent, had stated that the Red Crescent intervened with migrants on the Tunisian-Libyan border from the very beginning to provide assistance, as per his statement.
