The Syrian Ministry of Transport announced on Sunday evening that Aleppo Airport will resume its operations on Monday morning after being targeted by an Israeli airstrike, which had rendered it non-functional.
The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that the ministry stated, “Air traffic at Aleppo International Airport will resume as of tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. after repairing the damages caused by the Israeli aggression that targeted it last night.”
Last Thursday, Syrian air defenses intercepted Israeli missiles that targeted Aleppo International Airport with guided missiles launched from over the regional waters. This resulted in the airport’s temporary suspension of operations, along with Damascus International Airport.
The Israeli military had earlier confirmed launching attacks on the source of missile launches from Syrian territory.
In a separate statement, a high-ranking Syrian security source informed Sputnik that “the Israeli aggression targeted Aleppo International Airport’s runway, causing significant damage and rendering it non-functional again, after it was repaired following a previous attack.”
Israeli Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi confirmed the destruction of Aleppo International Airport once more in response to a rocket launched from Syria towards Israel.
The escalation continues between the Palestinian group Hamas and Israeli forces following the launch of “Operation Al-Aqsa Sword” by Hamas on October 7th. Thousands of rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel, and Israeli forces entered settlements adjacent to Gaza, capturing a significant number of Israeli military and civilian personnel.
In response, the Israeli military initiated “Operation Iron Sword” and carried out intense airstrikes on Gaza, in addition to engaging in clashes with Hamas fighters within the settlements.
The resumption of operations at Aleppo Airport is significant in the context of the ongoing conflict in Syria. The airport serves as a key transportation hub, connecting the country to international destinations and playing a vital role in the movement of goods and people.
However, it has been a frequent target in the Israeli-Syrian conflict, leading to disruptions in its services. The recent Israeli airstrike on the airport highlights the continued tensions in the region and the challenges faced by Syria in maintaining its infrastructure amidst a complex geopolitical landscape.
