Syrian President Bashar Assad has arrived in China on an official visit, marking his first visit to the country since the commencement of Syria’s 12-year-long conflict.

China has been a prominent supporter of Assad throughout this tumultuous period.

The announcement of President Assad’s visit was made by China’s Foreign Ministry, which revealed that he would be participating alongside other foreign leaders in the opening ceremony of the upcoming Asian Games.

This international sporting event is scheduled to commence on Saturday and will take place in the eastern city of Hangzhou.

China has significantly expanded its influence in the Middle East, notably mediating a landmark deal between Saudi Arabia and Iran in March. Furthermore, China continues to provide support to President Assad amidst the ongoing Syrian conflict, which has resulted in the loss of half a million lives and widespread devastation throughout the nation.

Mao Ning, the spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, commented on President Assad’s visit, stating that it is anticipated to “further deepen political mutual trust and cooperation in various fields between the two countries and push bilateral relations to a new level.”

The visit signifies the continuing relationship and cooperation between China and Syria in various spheres.
