Spotify seems to be exploring further AI integrations within its app, specifically in the form of AI-enhanced playlists.
Insights from the app’s coding suggest the possibility of the development of generative AI playlists that users can create via specific prompts.
The newfound features were brought to light by tech-savvy investor Chris Messina, who shared screenshots of Spotify’s app code that hint at “AI playlists” and “playlists guided by your prompts.”
Messina speculated that the creation of such playlists might be an available feature within the Blend genre, which amalgamates the musical preferences of various users to compile a playlist catering to all included tastes.
A Spotify representative conveyed to TechCrunch, “At Spotify, we continuously innovate and ideate to enhance our product and deliver value to users. However, we do not engage in speculation about potential new features and have no new updates to share at this point,” it seems the groundwork for AI-prompted playlists might have been subtly established already.
When the company introduced a feature known as Niche mixes, enabling users to craft distinctive playlists merely based on descriptive inputs, it set a precedent for such functionality.
Presently, these Niche mixes permit users to specify an almost limitless array of criteria to formulate a playlist — be it a genre, a mood, or an aesthetic, for example, Cottagecore Indie Mix, Bubblegum Pop Mix, Discofox Mix, Feel Good Driving Mix, Fun Road Trip Mix, or Travel Mashup Mix, among others.
Nonetheless, Spotify clarified upon the March launch of the Niche Mixes that, contrary to initial perceptions, they were not powered by AI. The company affirmed that the mixes were propelled by its own personalization technology and algorithms.
