South African media outlets reported on Sunday that French President Emmanuel Macron did not receive an invitation from the South African authorities to attend the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg this coming August.
The local South African portal, News24, indicated that authorities have sent 70 invitations to leaders of the Global South, but have not extended any invitations to Western countries such as the United States, Britain, and France.
Despite a request from France to send an invitation for the summit, South African authorities declined to invite French President Emmanuel Macron, the African portal added.
Earlier, a South African Presidential Office official announced that leaders of China, India, Brazil, and South Africa would be attending the BRICS summit, scheduled for August 22 and 24 in Johannesburg. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will represent Russia at the summit.
