The Somali army announced that security and intelligence forces carried out military operations in the Yaqle area of Middle Shabelle and the Jirelle area of Galgadud, resulting in the death of 40 Al-Shabaab militants and injuries to 29 others.
The Somali News Agency reported that joint forces confirmed the death of a key leader named Maalim Arrow during the military operation, which lasted more than 24 hours.
Additionally, the report mentioned that Somali intelligence forces thwarted attempts by Al-Shabaab militants linked to Al-Qaeda in the Yaqle area of Middle Shabelle, killing all militants present and destroying weapons storage facilities.
Somalia’s security situation remains volatile, with Al-Shabaab continuing to pose a significant threat despite military offensives against the group. Al-Shabaab, an affiliate of Al-Qaeda, controls large areas in central and southern Somalia and regularly attacks government and civilian targets. The Somali government has been conducting a major military campaign against Al-Shabaab since 2022, with some progress in reclaiming territory.
Recent efforts have included joint operations by Somali forces, supported by the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and international partners. These actions aim to weaken Al-Shabaab’s control and influence, particularly in central regions like Hirshabelle and Galmudug. However, Al-Shabaab has adapted by shifting its focus and launching counterattacks, creating ongoing challenges for Somali forces. Despite the setbacks, the government remains committed to eliminating the group’s presence in the country.
The situation in Somalia is further complicated by humanitarian needs, as ongoing conflicts have displaced many civilians. The international community continues to support Somalia in its efforts to maintain stability and counter Al-Shabaab, while also addressing the needs of those affected by the violence.
