Slovakia has frozen decisions to provide military aid to Ukraine following the victory of opposition populists in legislative elections, according to the presidential office.

Presidential spokesperson Martin Strizinec told AFP that President Zuzana Caputova shares the view of the outgoing Prime Minister that “decisions on this issue should reflect the result of the recent legislative elections.”

According to Strizinec, a decision on military aid at this moment would set a precedent for the incoming government, adding that the outgoing administration has limited powers.

He clarified that Caputova “has not changed her position on military aid to Ukraine and will continue to support it.”

The populist “Smer-SD” party led by former Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico secured 23% of the votes in Saturday’s election, defeating the centrist “Progressive Slovakia” party, which garnered 18% of the votes.

Fico was tasked with forming a new government on Monday.
