Saudi Aramco, the leading Saudi Arabian company, has successfully produced and exported its inaugural shipment of high-quality blue ammonia from the Kingdom to Japan, in collaboration with the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) and Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC).
According to the Al-Weeam newspaper, 40 tons of blue ammonia were exported for use in carbon-free energy production. Ahmed Al-Khowaiter, Chief Technology Officer at Saudi Aramco, expressed his hope that this shipment will highlight the potential of hydrocarbon materials as reliable sources of low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia.
Saudi Aramco holds a $3.4 billion stake in Rongsheng Petrochemicals. Masakazu Toyoda, the Chairman and CEO of the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan, underscored the significance of blue ammonia in reducing carbon emissions and maintaining a balance between the environment and economy. He added that about 10% of energy in Japan can be generated using 30 million tons of blue ammonia.
Earlier, Saudi Aramco announced its intention to increase gas production by 60% by 2030. The company’s CEO, Amin Nasser, outlined plans to boost gas production by 50-60% by 2030, according to the Saudi newspaper, Sabq.
Saudi Arabia’s Energy Minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, disclosed the Kingdom’s strategic plans to increase its oil, gas, and clean energy production in January. He indicated during his speech at the opening of the “Sufficiency 2023” exhibition that Saudi Arabia is working to increase its oil production capacity.
