Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) has officially commenced trials for hydrogen trains in the Kingdom, marking a significant leap towards sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation. The trials follow the collaboration between SAR and the French company Alstom, with an agreement signed to conduct operational tests and studies aimed at adapting these innovative trains to the Saudi environment.

The launch of hydrogen train trials, which began in October, is a groundbreaking development for the Middle East and North Africa region, with SAR emphasizing its commitment to implementing the objectives outlined in the National Transport and Logistics Strategy. The move aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader vision for a more sustainable transport system that embraces cutting-edge smart technologies.

Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser, Minister of Transportation and Logistics and SAR Chairman of the Board of Directors, highlighted the significance of this step in the context of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Saudi Arabia’s commitment to the Saudi Green Initiative. This initiative, stemming from the Saudi Vision 2030, emphasizes reducing carbon emissions, increasing reliance on clean energy, and prioritizing environmental protection.

Al-Jasser acknowledged the unwavering support received from Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for the transport and logistics sector. This support enables the sector to pursue its projects and developmental initiatives.

SAR CEO Dr. Bashar Al-Malik underscored the company’s dedication to initiatives aligned with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy. Describing hydrogen trains as a pivotal innovation in sustainable transport, Dr. Al-Malik emphasized their eco-friendly operation, generating energy without carbon emissions. He highlighted the positive impact of hydrogen trains on the environment, economy, and the prospects of future generations.

The hydrogen train trials represent a crucial step in Saudi Arabia’s journey toward cleaner and more sustainable transportation, contributing to global efforts in combating climate change and fostering a greener future.
