Nikolai Patrushev, the Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, stated on Thursday that the latest military exercises conducted by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) appear to be rehearsals for an armed confrontation with Russia.
According to Russia’s official news agency Interfax, Patrushev, who is close to President Vladimir Putin, remarked that NATO’s exercises are “destabilizing and heighten tensions.”
NATO is conducting the Northern Response exercises in the north of Norway, Sweden, and Finland, involving 20,000 troops from 13 countries.
The NATO exercises are scheduled to continue until March 14th.
Recent tensions between NATO and Russia have been significantly influenced by Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO, which Russia vehemently opposes. Moscow demands guarantees that Ukraine will never join the alliance and wants NATO to cease military activities in Eastern Europe, claiming these actions compromise regional security. NATO and Western leaders have rejected these demands, maintaining their “open door policy” which allows any European country to request membership. Despite ongoing negotiations, there has been little success in de-escalating the situation, with both sides holding firm on their stances.
NATO has expressed support for Ukraine’s ambition to join the alliance, a goal enshrined in Ukraine’s constitution. In 2008, NATO leaders assured Ukraine of future membership opportunities. Despite deepening cooperation, there’s little likelihood of Ukraine joining NATO soon due to concerns over unresolved corruption and other criteria. Moreover, NATO members are cautious about extending membership amid high tensions with Russia, fearing it could draw them into direct conflict.
