Valery Zorkin, the head of Russia’s Constitutional Court, and Jassim Mohammed Aboud, the president of the Iraqi Supreme Federal Court, signed a memorandum of cooperation today in the field of judiciary.
The signing took place during Aboud’s official visit to St. Petersburg, Russia, marking a pivotal step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
Zorkin warmly welcomed Aboud and his accompanying delegation, expressing Russia’s commitment to standing with Iraq and cooperating in various fields to benefit the people of both nations.
The Iraqi Supreme Federal Court, in a statement released by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), highlighted the meeting as an opportunity to review the bilateral relations and explore ways to enhance them.
During the meeting, the two leaders discussed the most significant decisions issued by the Iraqi Supreme Federal Court and its role in embedding proper democratic principles and ensuring the constitution’s application.
The court’s statement emphasized its keenness to establish bilateral relations with international constitutional courts to exchange legal expertise in the constitutional judiciary, which will contribute to the development and benefit from the accumulated experiences of other constitutional courts.
Furthermore, both parties reviewed the relations between Iraq and Russia and emphasized the importance of strengthening them to leverage Russian expertise in developing the Iraqi constitutional judiciary.
The agreement underscores a mutual commitment to support the democratic building process and protect both public and private rights and freedoms.
This cooperative memorandum represents a crucial step towards enhancing judicial processes and sharing best practices between Iraq and Russia, aiming to foster stronger democratic foundations and judicial integrity in both nations.
