Moscow announced on Saturday that it had destroyed 47 drones launched by Kyiv in the airspace over southern Russia during the night, most of them in the Rostov region bordering Ukraine.
The Russian military stated through social media platforms that “air defense systems operating destroyed one drone over the Belgorod region, two drones over the Kursk region, three drones over the Volgograd region, and 41 drones over the Rostov region.”
Rostov serves as a significant center for the Russian military to plan its military operations in Ukraine amid the invasion, which has entered its third year.
Rostov’s Governor Vasily Golubev reported that drone attacks targeted the city of Taganrog, overlooking the Sea of Azov, close to the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia, resulting in one injury.
Similarly, Roman Starovoit, Governor of the Kursk region located north of Rostov, reported that a clinic was damaged due to the attacks. Starovoit shared a video on social media outside the damaged clinic in Kursk, stating, “Fortunately, everyone is alive.” He mentioned that patients had been evacuated from a nearby hospital.
Kursk is situated approximately 120 km from the Ukrainian border and has a population of around 440,000.
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has been ongoing, with recent developments highlighting the tense situation. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began over two years ago, has been described as the deadliest war on European soil in more than 70 years. The conflict has seen significant military actions, including drone attacks and missile strikes, and has involved various regions, including Donetsk and Kherson.
Turkey has offered to host peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, with Turkish President Erdogan playing a mediating role. However, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy indicated that Russia might not be invited to the initial meeting. This gesture by Turkey underscores the international community’s efforts to find a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
The war has had profound implications, not only in terms of human casualties and displacements but also in diplomatic relations, with high-level meetings and discussions taking place to address the situation. The conflict has drawn international attention and intervention, with various countries pledging support and military aid to Ukraine.
