On Friday, the Sudanese army announced the killing of Ali Yaqub Jibril, the commander of the Central Darfur sector of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), during a battle in El Fasher.
Sources reported that Arko Minawi, the governor of the Darfur region, confirmed the death of Ali Yaqub Jibril, who led the RSF movements in El Fasher. Reuters noted that Jibril was under U.S. sanctions.
In a statement, the Sudanese army said it thwarted an RSF attack on the city of El Fasher, inflicting significant casualties on the RSF personnel.
The statement detailed that the RSF launched an assault on El Fasher this morning, but the armed forces and joint forces repelled the attack, causing heavy losses, including hundreds of dead and wounded RSF fighters.
Among the casualties was their leader, Ali Yaqub Jibril, who was killed in the failed attack attempt.
The statement also mentioned that the army destroyed and seized dozens of combat vehicles from the RSF.
As of now, the RSF has not issued any comments regarding the incident.
The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on a British-drafted resolution demanding an end to the paramilitary RSF siege of El Fasher, a city in North Darfur, Sudan.
The draft resolution calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities, a halt to the escalation in and around the city, and the withdrawal of all combatants who threaten the safety and security of civilians.
Britain has requested that the 15-member Security Council vote on the draft resolution, which requires at least nine votes in favour and no vetoes from any of the five permanent members—Russia, China, the US, Britain, and France—to be adopted.
