The Swedish embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, was stormed by protesters following a Quran burning incident in Sweden.
The incident occurred when Salwan Momika, an Iraqi living in Sweden, set fire to a copy of the Quran outside Stockholm’s central mosque on Wednesday. The act of burning the holy book sparked condemnation from Muslim-majority countries.
In response to the Quran burning, a crowd gathered outside the Swedish embassy in Baghdad on Thursday after a prominent cleric called for an “angry” protest.
Videos shared on social media depicted dozens of protesters entering the embassy’s courtyard.
The Quran burning incident took place on the first day of Eid al-Adha, a significant festival in the Muslim calendar celebrated by Muslims worldwide.
Swedish authorities had granted Mr. Momika a permit for the protest, citing freedom of speech laws. However, the police later stated that the incident was under investigation for incitement of hatred.
