Oslo Airport announced on Wednesday the suspension of air traffic as heavy snowfall wreaked havoc on transportation across Scandinavia.
The airport stated that it would remain closed at least until 3:30 PM local time (14:30 GMT), with a reassessment scheduled afterward, as posted on its social media platforms.
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute issued warnings of heavy snowfall and strong winds in the vicinity of the capital,
Oslo. This extreme weather condition led to the cancellation of most bus services, while the train operator, Vy, confirmed that train routes were closed in extensive areas of eastern Norway.
In neighboring Sweden, heavy snowfall resulted in numerous traffic accidents in the western and southern regions, causing significant traffic congestion on several major roads.
The police issued a statement emphasizing the extremely slippery road conditions and urged citizens to avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary.
The abrupt closure of Oslo Airport and widespread travel disruptions highlight the challenges posed by severe winter weather conditions in the region.
Travelers are advised to stay updated on the situation and exercise caution if travel is essential during these adverse weather conditions.
