In a significant move, the new authorities in Niger announced the reopening of both air and land borders with Algeria, Libya, Mali, Chad, and Burkina Faso at dawn on Wednesday.

This decision comes after the military officials in Niger, on July 26th, announced the isolation of President Mohamed Bazoum and the closure of borders.

The Nigerien military stated through a broadcast on the national television that President Mohamed Bazoum has been isolated, the borders have been closed, and a curfew has been imposed.

Prior to this, military personnel from the Presidential Guard had closed access to the presidential palace in the capital city, Niamey.

It’s worth noting that Bazoum was elected in 2021 and is considered a close ally of France.
