NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that the Ukraine war would ultimately be resolved through negotiations.
In an interview released on Saturday, he emphasized that dialogue with Russia must happen at some point, but only after Ukraine has demonstrated its strength.
Stoltenberg acknowledged that NATO could have provided more military support to Ukraine before Russia’s 2022 invasion, possibly preventing the conflict.
“Now we supply weapons during a war — we could have done it to prevent the war,” he said, referring to NATO’s initial reluctance to provide Kyiv with requested weapons due to fears of escalating tensions with Russia.
After the invasion, Ukraine, though not a NATO member, received significant military aid from Western allies.
Stoltenberg, NATO’s leader since 2014, will step down in October, with former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte set to take over.
