The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates has confirmed that it is closely monitoring the situation of Moroccan citizens held in Myanmar by criminal gangs and networks.
According to the ministry, “The victims did not travel to Thailand as tourists, but were recruited by companies operating on both sides of the Myanmar-Thailand border, engaging in internet fraud and scams.”
It was revealed that “the victims were lured with false job offers in e-commerce, which included lucrative work packages covering airfare and accommodation expenses.”
The Moroccan embassy in Bangkok has been actively coordinating with the relevant authorities in Thailand and Myanmar, which have mobilized their resources to secure the release of the detained Moroccans. However, these efforts face challenges on the ground due to the companies’ presence in areas controlled by armed rebels.
This case highlights a severe issue of trafficking and deceit at the border, drawing attention to the risks faced by those seeking better opportunities abroad. The Moroccan government is working diligently to resolve the situation and ensure the safety and return of its citizens.
