Mexico’s new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has called for the recognition of both Palestine and Israel as sovereign states, emphasizing that this step is essential for achieving peace in the Middle East.
This marks Sheinbaum’s first statement on the subject since assuming office on October 1st.
In a daily press conference, Sheinbaum reiterated Mexico’s long-standing position, stating, “There must be recognition of the Palestinian state, just like the state of Israel. This has been Mexico’s stance for many years.”
Sheinbaum also condemned the ongoing violence in the region, highlighting that war will never lead to a positive outcome.
As a leftist politician of Jewish European descent, Sheinbaum has expressed a secular worldview. In January 2009, she publicly criticized a previous Israeli military operation in Gaza, declaring her atheism.
She also referenced the actions of Mexico’s previous administration under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which condemned the attack by Hamas in Israel on October 7, 2023, as well as the subsequent Israeli airstrikes on Gaza.
