Meta Bans Political Advertisers from Using "AI Tools"

Meta has implemented a policy that excludes political entities and other regulated sectors from utilizing its emerging generative AI advertising capabilities.

This move, announced by a company representative on Monday, is aimed at curbing the use of advanced technology that could potentially amplify the dissemination of false information during election periods.

While the tech firm‘s advertising guidelines forbid the use of content already refuted by its network of fact-checkers, there are currently no specific regulations regarding AI-generated content.

The prohibition on certain advertisers was made public via updates to the company’s help center on Monday evening.

In a statement included in various sections detailing the operation of these AI tools, Meta specified, “In our ongoing trials of new Generative AI tools within Ads Manager, we do not allow advertisers who deal with Housing, Employment, Credit, Social Issues, Elections, Politics, Health, Pharmaceuticals, or Financial Services to employ these Generative AI functionalities.”

Meta believes this measure will aid in the comprehensive assessment of possible risks and aid in developing robust controls for the deployment of Generative AI in advertising, particularly for content that touches on sensitive matters in regulated fields.

This development follows Meta’s announcement last month of its intent to broaden access to its AI-driven ad tools, which have the capacity to autonomously generate backgrounds, tailor images, and produce various advertising texts in reaction to simple prompts.

These tools, which had been accessible to a select group of advertisers earlier in the year, are expected to be available to all advertisers worldwide by 2024.

Meta, along with other tech giants, has been rapidly introducing generative AI advertising products and virtual assistants. This surge in activity has been partly sparked by the excitement surrounding OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a chatbot launched last year that can generate human-like text responses.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq" announced this evening, Sunday, that it targeted the American base "Qasrak" in the countryside of Hasakah, Syria, with drones, and a military target in the occupied Golan, with appropriate weapons. "The Islamic Resistance in Iraq" stated in two separate statements that they targeted "continuing our approach in resisting the American occupation forces in Iraq and the region, and in response to the massacres of the Zionist entity against our people in Gaza, the mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq attacked the occupied Qasrak base in the countryside of Hasakah, Syria, with drones, and a military target in the occupied Golan, confirming the Islamic Resistance's continuation in striking the enemy's strongholds." "The Islamic Resistance in Iraq" had announced on Saturday the targeting of two American occupation bases in Syrian depth, "Al-Tanf" and "Al-Shaddadi", with drones, affirming their continuation in "striking the enemy's strongholds." An American official told the "Washington Post" that the "International Coalition" forces have been subjected to about 115 attacks in the Middle East since October 17 last year. The attacks have been attributed to Iran-backed militias and have involved a mix of drones, rockets, mortars, and ballistic missiles. While many of these attacks were intercepted or did not reach their targets, some resulted in injuries to U.S. troops, including dozens of cases of traumatic brain injuries. The increase in attacks followed a period of relative calm and a truce with Iranian-backed forces in Iraq. The attacks resumed after a Thanksgiving weekend break that coincided with a humanitarian pause in the Israel-Hamas war. The Pentagon recorded 78 attacks in total, with a reduction in frequency after late November. These attacks are seen as part of the broader regional tensions exacerbated by the Israel-Hamas war. The U.S. response to these attacks has been measured, including targeted strikes on facilities in Syria used by the militias. The Pentagon has emphasized its intent to defend U.S. and coalition forces against any threats, suggesting responses at times and manners of their choosing.
