The military governments of Burkina Faso and Mali have issued stern warnings against any potential military intervention targeting the coup leaders in Niger.
In joint statements broadcasted on their national broadcasters, the two neighbouring countries asserted that such intervention would be considered a “declaration of war” against their nations.
The warnings came in response to West African leaders’ threats to employ force to reinstate Niger’s deposed President, Mohamed Bazoum, after the recent coup in the country.
Expressing their “fraternal solidarity” with the people of Niger, the transitional governments of Burkina Faso and Mali emphasized that the decision taken by Niger’s citizens to take control of their destiny and sovereignty is a matter of national responsibility.
The military governments of Burkina Faso and Mali underscored the potential “disastrous consequences” that could arise from any military intervention in Niger, warning that such actions could destabilize the entire region.
The statements aimed to assert their support for Niger’s internal affairs and discourage any external interference that could escalate tensions in the region.
