Luciano Spalletti has been appointed as the new head coach of Italy’s national soccer team, according to an announcement by the country’s football federation on Friday.
Spalletti, aged 64, is taking over from Roberto Mancini, who resigned on 13 August .
Spalletti’s recent success includes leading Napoli to its first Serie A title in 33 years during the previous season. His extensive managerial career spans various clubs, including AS Roma, Inter Milan, and a significant five-year tenure at Russian club Zenit St Petersburg.
Having taken a sabbatical from his Napoli role in May, Spalletti’s appointment marks his return to coaching.
The Italian Football Federation confirmed that he will officially assume the role on September 1.
Gabriele Gravina, president of the federation, expressed his contentment with the appointment, stating, “The national team needed a great coach, and I’m very happy that he accepted.”
